Module 2 - Designing Interactions: Visualizing Data

Nicole Ocampo

Weekly Activities

In our second module, we built on our learning and concept development from Module 1 by creating and testing rough prototypes of our final idea. During the past few weeks, my group and I participated in weekly workshops and activities to deepen our understanding of the Arduino and physical materials, while conducting user testing and research.

Workshop 1 Geurilla Prototyping I

Using tutorials from class, my group and I practiced guerrilla prototyping techniques to create a cardboard prototype of a phone stand Our first cardboard phone stand Our prototype holding a phone We analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of our prototype and made an iteration that accomodated its faults. Our two prototypes side by side for comparison.

Workshop 2 Geurilla Prototyping II

My group and I sketched ideas for our furry health companion. We also sketched ideas for the app that goes along with it Our group then analyzed different plushies that would work well as a health companion. This was one of our final candidates. Activity 1: My Resarch

My partner Lucy and I cut open the plushies to analyze their fabric. This image shows us working with Mario the bear. My partner Lucy and I cut open the plushies to analyze their fabric. This image shows Pongo's fur We tested the best places to fit the arduino sensors inside the plushies. This is a GIF of us opening up Pongo the penguin. Activity 2: My Reearch

My partner Lucy and I tested our plushies with our classmates. We wanted to see how people would interact with them without instructions. We noticed we had a broad range of reactions. This was our 2nd testing plan. We decided to test and see if adding a patch affect user interactions. We added a patch to all three plushies These are our research notes on our second usability test.

Additional Research or Workshops

I created an inspiration board for our Protopie app design. These are some lo-fi sketches of our app design. We noted how users interacted with each plushie during our first usability test. Miffy the Health Companion

Project 2 Concept

Our weekly activities led us to make our first prototype: Miffy. Miffy is a fluffy health companion that tracks temperature through touch. She was designed to make healthcare more approachable, playful, and humane. With the new knowledge and peer feedback we gained, we will continue to improve Miffy in the final phase of this project.
